What is General Cargo Rate (GCR) and how is it Calculated?

General Cargo Rate (GCR) is a term used in the shipping industry to refer to the cost of transporting general cargo, which includes a variety of goods that do not require specialized handling or equipment. Examples of general cargo include clothing, electronics, and consumer goods.

The GCR is calculated based on a variety of factors, including the weight and volume of the cargo, the origin and destination of the shipment, and the mode of transportation used. The GCR is typically expressed as a rate per unit of weight or volume, such as dollars per ton or dollars per cubic meter.

The GCR may also include additional charges, such as fuel surcharges, terminal handling charges, and other fees associated with the transportation of the cargo. These charges can vary depending on the carrier and the specific terms of the shipping agreement.

The calculation of the GCR can be complex, and it often involves negotiations between the shipper and the carrier to determine a fair and competitive rate. Many carriers offer volume discounts or other incentives to shippers who transport large quantities of cargo or who commit to long-term contracts.
