What is Cubage & How is it Calculated?

Cubage in shipping refers to the total volume or capacity of a shipment, typically measured in cubic meters (m³) or cubic feet (ft³). Cubage is calculated by multiplying the length, width, and height of the shipment to determine its total cubic size.

Cubage is an important consideration in shipping because it determines the amount of space that a shipment will occupy on a truck, train, or ship, and thus influences the cost of transportation. Carriers often use a combination of weight and cubage to determine the cost of shipping a shipment, with the greater of the two being used as the basis for pricing.
