Break Bulk

Tags: Glossary

The handling of cargo that is individually loaded onto a ship rather than being in containers.

What does Break Bulk refer to?

Break Bulk refers to the handling of cargo that is not containerized and is loaded individually or in smaller units onto a vessel. This type of cargo is typically too large, heavy, or irregularly shaped to fit into standard shipping containers. Break bulk cargo is loaded, secured, and unloaded using specialized equipment and techniques.

Break bulk shipments may include machinery, equipment, vehicles, heavy project cargo, and other oversized items. Handling break bulk cargo requires careful stowage and securing to ensure safe transportation and prevent damage during loading and unloading operations. Break bulk shipping is commonly used for non-containerized cargo that requires special attention and handling throughout the transportation process.
