Bulk Cargo

Tags: Glossary

Unpacked, homogeneous cargo, typically loaded directly into the ship's hold without packaging.

What is Bulk Cargo?

Bulk cargo refers to loosen, unpackaged, or non-containerized goods that are loaded directly into a vessel’s hold or tank without individual packaging or handling. This cargo is typically poured or pumped, rather than being loaded in individual units.

Bulk cargo can be divided into two main categories: dry bulk and liquid bulk. Dry bulk cargo includes commodities such as grains, coal, ores, cement, and fertilizers, while liquid bulk cargo includes liquids such as oil, chemicals, and liquefied gases. Bulk cargo is transported in large quantities and requires specialized handling and loading/unloading equipment.
