What is a Certificate of Insurance?

A Certificate of Insurance (COI) is a document that provides evidence that an insurance policy has been issued and that it meets certain requirements. In the context of shipping, a COI is often used to demonstrate that a shipment is covered by insurance in the event of loss or damage.

The COI typically includes details about the insurance policy, such as the name of the insurance company, the policy number, the type of coverage, and the period of coverage. It may also include information about the parties involved in the shipment, such as the shipper, the consignee, and any other parties that may have an interest in the shipment.

COI is often required by the buyer or seller of goods as a condition of the transaction, and it may be required by regulatory agencies or other authorities as well. It serves as proof that the shipment is covered by insurance, which can provide peace of mind and financial protection in the event of loss or damage.
