What does Empty Leg mean?

An empty leg is a term used in the shipping industry to refer to a situation where a carrier is transporting goods in one direction but is returning empty or with minimal cargo. This can occur, for example, when a carrier is delivering goods to a destination but has no cargo to pick up on the return trip. Empty legs are generally considered to be inefficient and can result in higher costs for carriers as they are not generating revenue from the return trip.
