What is Deadhead?

Deadhead is a term used in shipping to refer to the movement of an empty truck, train, or other transportation vehicle back to its point of origin or to a new destination without any cargo or passengers.

Deadheading occurs when a carrier has delivered its cargo to a destination and does not have any cargo to transport on the return trip. In such cases, the carrier may choose to deadhead the transportation vehicle back to its point of origin or to a new destination where it can pick up a new load.
