What is a Specified Commodity Rate (SCR) and how is it Calculated?

A Specified Commodity Rate (SCR) is a transportation rate for a specific commodity or group of commodities between two specified points. It is a special rate that applies only to the particular commodity or group of commodities mentioned in the rate.

SCRs are usually negotiated between the carrier and the shipper based on the volume and type of commodity being shipped, as well as the distance between the origin and destination. The rate is typically expressed as a unit price per hundredweight or per ton, depending on the weight and volume of the shipment.

In order to calculate an SCR, the carrier and shipper would typically take into account the following factors:

  • Type and volume of commodity being shipped
  • Distance between the origin and destination points
  • Equipment required to transport the commodity (e.g. flatbed, refrigerated, tank, etc.)
  • Mode of transportation (e.g. truck, rail, ocean vessel, etc.)
  • Any special handling or packaging requirements
  • Applicable regulations and laws governing the transportation of the commodity.

Once these factors are taken into account, the carrier and shipper can negotiate a rate that is specific to the commodity being shipped, based on the costs associated with transporting it.
