What is a Chassis Split?

Chassis Split refers to a situation in which the responsibility for providing and paying for the chassis is divided between the carrier and the cargo owner (consignee) for an inland container move. In some cases, the carrier may provide the chassis, while in other instances, the cargo owner is responsible for procuring or leasing the chassis separately. Chassis split arrangements are common in regions or ports where there are different practices or agreements regarding the use and ownership of chassis. The specific terms for chassis splits are usually outlined in the transportation contract or booking agreement.
