Anti-Knock Mixtures - IMO Class 6.1

Tags: Glossary

Hazardous substances used in fuel refinement, subject to strict maritime regulations.

What are Anti-Knock Mixtures?

Anti-Knock Mixtures, often referred to as anti-knock agents, are substances added to gasoline or other fuels to improve engine performance and reduce the risk of engine knocking. Engine knocking can lead to damage and reduced efficiency.

In the IMO classification system, Class 6.1 is designated for toxic substances. This classification indicates that Anti-Knock Mixtures can be harmful to human health and the environment and, therefore, require careful handling and transportation protocols.

When transporting Anti-Knock Mixtures by sea, proper packaging and labeling are crucial. Containers must be clearly marked with the appropriate hazard labels, including those indicating toxicity and flammability. Furthermore, Anti-Knock Mixtures must be stowed in accordance with IMO regulations, considering factors such as compatibility with other cargo and segregation requirements.
