What is a Port Handling Charge?

A Port Handling Charge refers to the fees levied by a port authority, terminal operator, or other relevant entities for the various services and operations involved in handling cargo and vessels at a port. These charges are a vital component of the overall cost structure in logistics, significantly impacting the economics of shipping and trade.

What’s Included in Port Handling Charges?

Port Handling Charges cover the costs associated with the loading and unloading of cargo from vessels. This includes the use of cranes, forklifts, and other equipment, as well as the labor required to transfer goods between ships and the shore. Also, vessels need a designated berth or docking area when they arrive at a port. Port handling charges often include fees for occupying these berths, which vary based on factors such as the size and type of vessel, duration of stay, and port congestion.
