Effect of Pilotage in Logistics

Pilotage refers to the guidance and navigation of ships within harbors, ports, and other confined or challenging waterways. It involves the use of specialized local knowledge and expertise to safely navigate vessels through areas where the conditions may be complex due to narrow channels, shallow waters, strong currents, or congested traffic.

How Pilotage Works?

The process of pilotage typically begins when a ship approaches the entrance to a port or a challenging waterway. Pilots board the vessel from a pilot boat, often equipped with advanced communication and navigation equipment. Once aboard, they work closely with the ship’s captain and crew, providing critical information and guidance. This includes advising on optimal routes, safe speeds, and necessary maneuvers to avoid hazards, such as sandbanks, rocks, or other vessels.
