Introduction to the European Union

The European Union (EU) is a unique political and economic union of 27 European countries that have chosen to work closely together on various issues, including trade, legislation, and governance, to promote peace, stability, and economic prosperity across the continent. Since its inception, the EU has evolved into one of the world’s most significant supranational organizations, with profound implications for both its member states and the global stage.

A fundamental pillar of the EU is the single market, which allows for the free movement of goods, services, capital, and people among member states. This has facilitated economic growth and trade within the Union. The euro, introduced in 1999, is the official currency of 19 EU member states, forming the Eurozone. It promotes further economic integration and simplifies cross-border trade.
