What does Over, Short and Damaged (OS&D) mean?

Over, Short and Damaged (OS&D) refers to a process used by shipping companies to identify and resolve issues with shipments that are either over or under the expected quantity or are damaged. When a shipment arrives at its destination, it is checked against the bill of lading to ensure that the correct quantity of goods has been received. If the shipment is over or short, the carrier must investigate to determine the cause of the discrepancy. If the shipment is damaged, the carrier must determine the extent of the damage and whether the damage was caused during shipping or was pre-existing.
