What is Net Weight & How is it Calculated?

Net weight is the weight of a product or commodity without the weight of the packaging, container, or any other materials used to transport it. It is an important measure used in the shipping industry to determine the actual weight of a shipment and calculate shipping costs.

To calculate net weight, the weight of the packaging, container, or any other materials used to transport the product is subtracted from the gross weight of the shipment. Gross weight is the total weight of the shipment, including the weight of the product and all the packaging, containers, and materials used to transport it.

For example, if a shipment of 100 widgets has a gross weight of 200 pounds, and the packaging used to transport the widgets weighs 20 pounds, then the net weight of the widgets would be 180 pounds (200 pounds – 20 pounds = 180 pounds)
