What is a Hatch?

In the context of shipping, a Hatch refers to an opening in the deck of a vessel that provides access to the cargo hold or storage area below. Hatches can be found on various types of vessels, including container ships, bulk carriers, and general cargo vessels.

Hatches are typically covered by a removable hatch cover, which is designed to keep the cargo below protected from the elements during transport. The hatch cover is typically made of steel or another durable material and is secured to the vessel with locking mechanisms to prevent it from coming loose during transport.
