What is a Carrier Liability?

In shipping, carrier liability refers to the legal responsibility of a carrier for loss or damage to goods during transport. The extent of the carrier’s liability depends on the terms of the shipping contract and the applicable laws and regulations.

Under most international shipping laws, carriers are generally responsible for loss or damage to goods that occur while the goods are in their custody or control. This is known as “strict liability,” which means that the carrier is held responsible regardless of whether they were at fault for the loss or damage.

However, carriers are not liable for certain types of loss or damage that occur due to factors beyond their control, such as natural disasters, acts of war, or inherent defects in the goods themselves.

The extent of the carrier’s liability may also be limited by the terms of the shipping contract. For example, the carrier may limit its liability to a specific amount per unit of weight or per package or may require the shipper to obtain additional insurance coverage for the goods.
