What is a Carousel?

In the context of shipping, a carousel refers to a type of container handling system used in ports and terminals. It is a circular or semi-circular platform that rotates on a track, allowing containers to be moved between the ship and the yard.

The carousel system consists of a series of support arms, which hold the containers in place as they are transported around the carousel. The support arms are typically hydraulically powered and can move up and down to allow containers to be loaded or unloaded from the platform.

The carousel system is designed to improve the efficiency of container handling operations in ports and terminals. It allows multiple containers to be loaded or unloaded simultaneously, reducing the time required for the entire operation. Additionally, the circular design of the carousel means that it can be used in areas where space is limited, as it does not require the same amount of room as other container handling systems.
