What does Double-Stack mean?

In the shipping context, double-stack refers to the practice of stacking shipping containers two-high on a freight train. Double-stack trains are more efficient than traditional single-stack trains because they can carry more cargo in the same amount of space. Double stacking requires specialized railcars and intermodal containers designed to fit the higher clearance requirements.
