In shipping, a Class I carrier refers to a large transportation company that provides intercity or long-haul transportation services across multiple states or regions. These carriers are typically the largest and most financially stable in the industry and are subject to regulation by government bodies such as the Surface Transportation Board in the United States. Examples of Class I carriers in the shipping industry include companies such as Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).
