What is a Shipment Identification Number?

A shipment identification number is a unique identifier that is assigned to a specific shipment by the shipping carrier. It is used to track the progress of the shipment from the time it is tendered to the carrier until it is delivered to its final destination. The shipment identification number may be used by the carrier, the shipper, and the consignee to monitor the status of the shipment and to communicate with each other about any issues that arise.
