What is a Reportable Quantity?

Reportable quantity (RQ) is a term used in the shipping industry to refer to the maximum number of hazardous materials that can be shipped without triggering the reporting requirements under the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR). The RQ varies depending on the type of hazardous material being shipped and is expressed in pounds or gallons. If the shipment exceeds the RQ, the carrier must comply with specific regulations for packaging, labeling, and reporting hazardous materials. This helps ensure the safe transport of hazardous materials and protect the environment and public health.
