What does JETSAM mean?

Jetsam is a term used in the shipping industry to refer to goods that have been intentionally thrown overboard from a ship in distress to lighten its load and increase its chances of survival. Jetsam is different from flotsam, which refers to goods that have been accidentally lost or abandoned at sea. Jetsam can be claimed by anyone who finds it, whereas flotsam is considered the property of the original owner until it is recovered. In modern times, the intentional disposal of goods at sea is strictly regulated to protect the environment and prevent marine pollution.
