Prepaid charges for shipping goods in advance.

What is Advance Freight and how is it calculated?

Advance Freight refers to the prepaid charges or fees associated with shipping goods in advance. It is typically paid by the shipper or consignor to the carrier before the goods are shipped. This payment ensures that the carrier will transport the goods as agreed upon, and it helps cover the initial costs associated with transportation, such as handling, loading, and documentation.

The calculation of Advance Freight charges in the logistics and supply chain industry depends on several factors, including the type of shipment, transportation mode, distance, weight, volume, and any additional services required. Here are some common methods used to calculate Advance Freight:

  • Flat Rate: In some cases, carriers may charge a flat rate for Advance Freight based on the shipment’s characteristics, such as the weight range, distance, or predetermined zones. This approach simplifies the calculation and provides a fixed cost for shipping.
  • Weight or Volume-based: For shipments where weight or volume is a critical factor, carriers may calculate Advance Freight based on the weight (in kilograms or pounds) or the volume (in cubic meters or cubic feet). They may have predefined rates per unit of weight or volume or use a combination of to determine the charges.
  • Distance-based: When the distance between the origin and destination is a significant factor, carriers may calculate Advance Freight based on the distance traveled. They may have predetermined rates per kilometer, mile, or other distance units to determine the charges.
  • Tariff Rates: Carriers may utilize published tariff rates that outline specific charges for different types of goods, transportation modes, and routes. These rates are often based on industry standards and are used as a guideline for calculating Advance Freight charges.
  • Negotiated Rates: In some cases, shippers and carriers negotiate specific rates based on factors such as shipment volume, frequency of shipments, or long-term contracts. These negotiated rates take into account various factors and are used to calculate the Advance Freight charges for the agreed-upon shipments.
