What is a Cabotage?

Cabotage in shipping refers to the transport of goods or passengers between two ports within the same country by a vessel that is registered in that country. Essentially, cabotage is a type of domestic shipping that is restricted to vessels that are owned, operated, and registered in the same country as the ports of departure and arrival.

Cabotage regulations vary by country and can be implemented for various reasons, such as protecting domestic shipping industries, promoting national security, and ensuring safety and environmental standards. Cabotage laws can also limit the operations of foreign vessels within a country’s territorial waters.
