Improper Stowage Surcharge – Discover the financial penalty imposed for cargo stowage deviations, promoting vessel safety and regulatory compliance.

The Essence of Improper Storage Surcharge

Improper Stowage Surcharge represents an additional fee imposed by shipping lines or carriers when cargo has been loaded, secured, or positioned in a way that deviates from safety regulations, operational guidelines, or the carrier’s terms and conditions.

Carriers have specific stacking rules and guidelines for containerized cargo. These rules consider factors like cargo weight, center of gravity, hazardous materials, and compatibility to ensure safe stowage.  Failing to comply with these requirements can lead to chemical reactions, fires, or contamination, posing a threat to both the vessel and the environment.
