What does Upstream refer to?

In shipping, upstream refers to the stages of the supply chain that occur prior to the point of manufacture or production. For example, upstream activities may include sourcing of raw materials, transportation of inputs to the manufacturing facility, and storage of raw materials or components in warehouses or distribution centers.
